ReadFor jewelry worn every day, yes, and for a reason you can check rather than take on trust: steel contains no copper, so there is nothing in it to leave a green mark, and its chromium forms an oxide film that repairs itself. What it does not tell you is how long the gold on top will last. That is a separate question with a separate answer.
ReadThree worth knowing: EN 1811 measures how much nickel a piece releases onto skin, EN 12472 ages a piece first so the nickel test is run on a worn surface rather than a new one, and XRF measures coating thickness. A report without its standard named is a logo, not a result.
ReadWater resistance depends on the complete piece, including its base, coating and construction. A stainless steel base alone does not establish that a gold finish is waterproof. Follow the product’s care guidance.
ReadFour things, and only one of them is the gold: the base metal and its grade, the finish process and its karat, what the post is made of, and whether any of it has been tested. A listing that answers all four is rarer than a listing that says premium, and the four take about a minute to check.
ReadHoops are measured across the diameter. Small is roughly 12 to 20mm and sits under the lobe, medium 20 to 35mm, large 40mm and up. For every day, 20 to 30mm is the size most people reach for without thinking about it.
ReadWrap a strip of paper or string around the base of the finger, mark where it meets, measure the length in millimetres, then divide by 3.14 for the diameter. Measure at the end of the day, on the exact finger, and check the knuckle as well as the base.
ReadNo, not the way silver and copper do. Stainless steel carries at least 10.5% chromium, which forms a thin chromium oxide film that reforms itself when scratched. It contains no copper, so it does not leave a green mark either.
ReadBecause there are three different ways to make a gold-colored piece and each has its own floor. Plated base metal bought as finished stock lands under about $60. Vermeil has a sterling silver body, so its cost scales with a commodity. Solid gold is priced off the metal. The prices jump rather than slide because the constructions do.
ReadA magnet separates solid gold and silver from pieces with an iron or steel base, because neither precious metal is magnetic. It cannot tell you whether a piece is well made, and it cannot catch the most common problem base metal of all: brass is not magnetic either, so brass-based plated jewelry passes the test.
ReadCopper. Green marks are copper salts, formed when copper in the alloy meets sweat and skin acids, and brass is around two thirds copper. It is a deposit on the skin rather than a reaction in it, it washes off, and it is a fact about the metal rather than a sign of an allergy.

ReadWarm water, one drop of washing-up liquid, fingers rather than a brush, and dry it completely before it goes away. What matters more is the list of things not to use: a polishing cloth, toothpaste, baking soda, silver dip and an ultrasonic cleaner all work by taking a layer off, and on a plated piece the layer they take off is the gold.
ReadTwo systems answer this and they disagree. The planetary one gives a sign the gem of the planet that rules it, which is why Gemini and Virgo share an emerald. The birth-month one is a 1912 retail standard and gives every sign two answers. Both are traditions, and neither is a tested property of a stone.
ReadThe modern birthstone list is a retail decision, not an ancient one: a jewelers' trade body standardised it in 1912 and has added stones since, most recently in 2016. The older symbolism is real, but it is symbolism, and no gemstone has a tested effect on health, luck or protection.
ReadWestern astrology sorts the twelve signs into four elements, and the element is the part that is useful when you are choosing jewelry: fire signs suit bold sculptural shapes, earth signs polished classics, air signs geometry and two tones, water signs fluid organic forms. The associations are symbolic and stylistic, not predictive.
