How I wear one pair of hoops three ways

I used to change earrings three times before leaving the house. Every pair felt like it was saying something I had not agreed to. Too much for the office. Not enough for dinner. Trying too hard, on a Tuesday.

Then I noticed the pair I liked best was the one I never thought about. The hoops were never the problem. Everything I kept adding around them was.

Hair up, and nothing else above the shoulders

With my hair up the hoop is the only thing happening on my face, so it does not need help. When I add a necklace here I have made two decisions compete, and neither of them wins.

For dinner I add a ring, not another earring

The same gold repeated on my hand reads as intent. A second, busier earring reads as effort. I would rather look decided than interesting.

At the weekend I let my hair half cover them

Half hidden, they stop being jewelry I put on and start being how I look. That is the whole trick and it costs nothing.

Three registers, one pair, no decisions at the door. I have not stood at that mirror changing earrings in about a year.
