Which gemstone goes with your star sign?
Two systems answer this and they disagree. The planetary one gives a sign the gem of the planet that rules it, which is why Gemini and Virgo share an emerald. The birth-month one is a 1912 retail standard and gives every sign two answers. Both are traditions, and neither is a tested property of a stone.

If someone has told you to wear a particular stone, they were almost certainly using the planetary system, where the gem follows the planet that rules your sign rather than the sign itself. The birth-month list is the other common answer, and because every sign runs across two months it gives you two. Neither is a claim about what the stone will do.
I was asked which stone I should be wearing, could not answer, and found that most of what is written about it blends two traditions into one and then adds promises neither of them makes. The traditions are more interesting kept apart.
The planetary system
Vedic astrology works with nine grahas: the Sun, the Moon, the five planets visible without a telescope, and the two lunar nodes. Each is paired with a gem, and the nine together are the navaratna, often set in a single ring with the ruby for the Sun at the centre.
| Body | Gem | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Ruby | Leo |
| Moon | Pearl | Cancer |
| Mars | Red coral | Aries, Scorpio |
| Mercury | Emerald | Gemini, Virgo |
| Jupiter | Yellow sapphire | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Venus | Diamond | Taurus, Libra |
| Saturn | Blue sapphire | Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Rahu, the north node | Hessonite | No sign |
| Ketu, the south node | Cat’s eye | No sign |
Read down the third column and the shape of the thing becomes clear. Seven bodies cover twelve signs, so five of them rule two signs each and those pairs share a stone. The two nodes rule nothing, which is why their gems appear in a navaratna set but never as a sign stone.
Why Scorpio gets coral and not something darker
Because the traditional scheme predates the telescope. It uses only what can be seen with the naked eye, so Scorpio belongs to Mars, Aquarius to Saturn and Pisces to Jupiter. Modern western astrologers reassigned those three to Pluto, Uranus and Neptune after they were discovered, which is a real change of mind rather than an old secret, and the stone lists never followed it. Rulerships as set out in Wikipedia on domicile).
The birth-month list is a different thing
The twelve monthly birthstones are not an astrological system at all. They are a retail standard adopted by an American jewelers’ association in 1912 and amended since, most recently in 2016. Signs do not line up with months, so your sign straddles two of them and the list cannot tell you which is yours. I wrote about where that list came from in do birthstones actually mean anything.
What the tradition actually claims, and what it does not
Worth being precise here, because the precision is usually the first thing lost. In Vedic practice a gem is prescribed from a whole birth chart, by someone reading the positions at your time and place of birth, and the stone chosen is frequently not the one belonging to your sun sign. A sun-sign stone chart of the kind you find on jewelry websites, including the one lower down every one of our zodiac pages, is a simplification of the practice rather than the practice.
Practitioners also treat some of these stones with real caution. Blue sapphire for Saturn is the usual example, normally trialled for a period before it is worn permanently. Whatever you make of the system, that is not the behaviour of people who think they are selling decoration.
What none of it is, is tested. No gemstone has been shown to affect health, luck, protection or fortune, and the sources making the strongest claims are almost always selling the stone. The tradition is old, coherent and worth knowing about. It is not evidence, and anyone presenting it as evidence has told you something about themselves.
If you are going to buy one
- Ask for the report before the price. Natural, lab-grown and treated stones all trade under the same names, and ruby, sapphire and emerald are among the most commonly treated of all.
- Ask which system the recommendation came from. A prescription from a whole chart and a stone from a sun-sign chart are different pieces of advice, and only one of them involved your birth time.
- Expect the planetary stones to cost. Ruby, emerald, diamond and sapphire are four of the most expensive gems there are, which is worth knowing before someone recommends all of them.
- Check the setting, not just the stone. The usual way a gemstone piece ends is the stone leaving it.
What we can and cannot offer
SIAFRA does not sell gemstones. Every piece is stainless steel with a gold or silver tone finish, so if you came here for a yellow sapphire I cannot help you, and I would rather say so than sell you a glass one with the right colour.
What we do have is the other half of the idea. Our edit by star sign chooses pieces by the qualities the tradition describes, in shape and texture and weight instead of stone: angular and commanding for the fire signs, substantial and worked for earth, geometric for air, fluid for water. The twelve sign pages each carry the stone their sign is given, so you can see what the tradition says and then decide separately what you actually want to wear. More on the style logic in which jewelry suits each star sign, and what the pieces are made of at specifications.
