Gold jewelry gifts that need no size

A jewelry gift fails in one of three ways: it arrives in the wrong size, it marks her skin, or it cannot be sent back. Earrings and open cuffs remove the first, because neither needs a measurement. A stainless steel base rather than brass removes the second, because there is no copper under the finish to leave a green mark. A return window that runs 30 days from delivery removes the third. Everything SIAFRA sells sits in that group, which is less a claim than an accident of a small assortment: three pairs of earrings and one open cuff, $58 to $80.

Which jewelry needs a size

This is the whole argument, and it is the reason to give earrings rather than the thing you were about to give.

GiftSize neededRisk of a return
EarringsNoneLowest. Nothing to measure and nothing to guess.
Open cuffNone, within a rangeLow. Adjusts across most wrists; a very large or small wrist is the exception.
Bracelet with a claspFixed lengthMedium. Either it fits or it goes back.
RingA number you do not haveHighest. Asking for it gives the gift away, and guessing it books a January return.

If a ring is the gift you actually want to give, the way to get the number without giving it away is in the ring size guide. We do not sell rings, so that advice costs us nothing.

The four, and who each one is for

Each of these includes the reason it might be the wrong choice. Four pieces do not need a shortlist. They need the one sentence that rules three of them out.

Allure Hoops

$58.00 · In stock · Available to order

The safest gift in the assortment. A plain rounded hoop at 16 mm sits close to the ear, so it suits someone whose jewelry you have never paid attention to as easily as someone whose you have.

Give it to
A first jewelry gift, or anyone whose taste you are guessing at. Small enough to wear to work, under a hat, or asleep.
Do not, if
If she already owns gold hoops, she owns these. Choose the sculpted pair or the drops instead.
Specification
316 stainless steel with 18K gold PVD. Approximately 16 mm across, with a 7.5 mm band.
Gold-Tone Pearl Drop Earrings

Rosée Drops

$60.00 · In stock · Available to order

The one that reads as an occasion without needing one. A 39 mm drop moves when she does, which is the difference between a gift that gets worn to a dinner and one that lives in a drawer.

Give it to
Someone who already wears earrings and would notice getting a second kind. The pearl effect is the softest thing in the assortment.
Do not, if
The drops are pearl-effect beads, not cultured pearls. If she would check, say so when you give it rather than let her find out.
Specification
Stainless steel with gold PVD, pearl-effect drops. Approximately 20 mm hoop with a 39 mm total drop, pearl included.
Sculptural gold huggie worn through the earlobe

Drapé Hoops

$64.00 · In stock · Available to order

The pick for someone with taste you are slightly intimidated by. The rippled face and squared opening are a specific choice rather than a safe one, and the texture is formed in the metal rather than printed on it.

Give it to
Someone who buys her own jewelry and whose last pair was not from a department store.
Do not, if
A deliberate shape, so it is the easiest of the four to get wrong if she dresses plainly.
Specification
316 stainless steel with 18K gold PVD. Approximately 16 mm tall and 12 mm across the front.

Ruban Cuff

$79.99 · In stock · Available to order

The gift for anyone whose ears are not pierced, which is the question most gift guides forget to ask. An open cuff adjusts across a range of wrists, so it behaves like earrings rather than like a bracelet with a clasp.

Give it to
Unpierced ears, a mother or a colleague, or anyone you would feel strange buying earrings for.
Do not, if
At 60 mm inside it is one size, not every size. A notably larger or smaller wrist is the one case in this guide where a measurement would help.
Specification
Stainless steel with high-polish gold PVD. Open cuff. Approximately 60 mm inner width, with a 5 mm band at its widest marked section.

Questions people actually ask

What jewelry can you give as a gift without knowing her size?

Earrings and open cuffs. Earrings need no measurement at all, and an open cuff is open at the back so it sits across a range of wrists rather than coming in sizes. Rings and clasped bracelets are the two that need a number you would have to ask for or guess. Every piece SIAFRA currently sells is in the first group: three pairs of earrings and one open cuff.

Is gold-plated jewelry a reasonable gift, or does it look cheap?

It is reasonable when the metal under the finish is named. Almost all gold jewelry under a hundred dollars is a gold finish over another metal, and what decides whether it survives to spring is the base, not the plating. These pieces are 316 stainless steel with an 18K gold PVD finish, so a worn spot exposes steel rather than the brass and copper that leave a green mark.

Can she return it if she does not like it?

Yes, within 30 days of the day it is delivered, unworn and in its original box with any tags attached. A piece delivered in the week before Christmas is therefore returnable through most of January. Two things worth knowing before you buy: pierced earrings have to come back unworn, which is a hygiene rule rather than a technicality, and for a change of mind the prepaid return label is shown to you first and then deducted from the refund.

Will it irritate her ears or turn her skin green?

A green mark comes from copper in a brass base as the finish thins, and these have a stainless steel base instead. Irritation is a separate question and depends on the person rather than the piece, so the honest answer is that steel posts are tolerated by most people and that no material suits everyone.

How much should you spend on a jewelry gift?

The useful answer is not a number but a construction. Between about $30 and $300 there is very little difference in what the gold layer is; the difference is what sits underneath it and whether the brand will tell you. These four pieces run from $58 to $80, and the specification is printed on each page rather than described as premium.

Does a gift need to be wrapped or boxed?

Each piece arrives in its own box, and the return policy asks for that box back if it does, so it is worth keeping whichever way it goes. There is no gift-wrap option or gift note at checkout yet, so if it is being handed over rather than posted, plan on wrapping it yourself.

What this guide does not offer

  • No delivery cut-off date, because shipping times are not published yet. Order early rather than trusting a date we have not promised.
  • No gift wrap, gift note or gift receipt at checkout. Each piece arrives in its own box and nothing more.
  • No rings, which is why this guide can afford to be honest about them being the riskiest gift in the category.

The rule we hold ourselves to is at our editorial standard, and the full terms are at returns.
