What Jewelry Should You Wear With Each Neckline?

For an open neckline, try a necklace that sits inside the opening. For a high or detailed neckline, start with earrings and add a necklace only if you like the balance.

01

What necklace goes with a V-neck?

A pendant that sits inside the V is an easy starting point. Leave enough space between the pendant and the fabric that neither catches on the other when you move.

Try the outfit sitting down as well as standing. A chain that looks right in a mirror may fall into the neckline when you lean forward. Adjust an existing clasp before buying another length.

02

What jewelry goes with a crewneck or turtleneck?

Studs or hoops keep the emphasis near your face; a longer necklace over a plain knit adds a line down the outfit. Choose the version that gives you the amount of detail you want.

On a chunky cable knit, a fine pendant may disappear into the texture. You can keep it underneath for yourself and let earrings be the visible detail. Check that a longer chain does not snag the fabric.

03

What jewelry goes with a strapless or square neckline?

A short necklace above the fabric can frame an open neckline. Statement earrings with no necklace are another option, especially when the dress already has a strong shape or embellishment.

With a square neckline, compare a short rounded chain with a pendant inside the opening. You do not need to copy the neckline’s geometry exactly. Look at the whole outfit rather than the necklace alone.

04

Should you wear a necklace with a detailed neckline?

You can, but start by trying earrings alone. Bows, ruffles, lace and beading already add detail near the neck. A ring or visible cuff can add jewelry elsewhere without crowding that area.

For a simple test, take a mirror photo with the necklace and another without it. Compare where your eye goes first. The better choice is the one that makes the outfit feel like yours.

Your neckline styling checklist

Get dressed before choosing the final combination.

  • Does the pendant stay clear of the neckline when I sit or lean forward?
  • Can I turn my head without earrings catching on the collar?
  • Is the knit or embellishment catching on the jewelry?
  • Do I prefer earrings alone, or earrings with a necklace?
