What Should You Check Before Buying Jewelry Online?

Before buying jewelry online, check the base metal, finish, dimensions, seller identity and return terms. Save the product description so you know exactly what was promised.

01

Does “18K gold” mean the whole piece is solid gold?

Not necessarily. Read the full description: “18K gold plated” describes a layer of gold over another material. Solid gold and gold-plated jewelry are different constructions, even when the finish looks similar.

The FTC explains that karat describes gold purity and that gold plating can wear away. A coating’s karat does not disclose the underlying metal, coating thickness or how a particular piece will perform. Ask for the missing detail rather than guessing from a photograph.

02

How can you tell how big jewelry will look online?

Use the listed measurements rather than a close-up image. Compare a ring’s width, a hoop’s diameter or a bracelet’s length with something you already own.

Look for several views and a clear scale reference. A model image can help you understand styling, but proportions vary between people. For earrings, weight per piece and closure details add information a front view cannot provide.

03

What do “waterproof” and “tarnish-free” tell you?

These claims need product-specific evidence and clear conditions to be useful. Ask what was tested, for how long and what the seller covers if the finish changes. A material name alone is not a wear test.

Care advice should match the piece’s materials. GIA advises protecting jewelry from chemicals and considering gemstone-specific care. Avoid assuming that one cleaning method suits every coating, stone or setting.

04

What return and warranty details matter for jewelry?

Check the return window, condition requirements, shipping costs and exclusions before payment. Earrings, engraved pieces and sale items may have different rules; read the actual policy.

A finish warranty and a change-of-mind return serve different purposes. Find out what each covers and how to make a claim. Keep a copy of the listing and purchase receipt so you can refer to the terms you bought under.

05

What should a transparent jewelry listing include?

A useful listing states what the piece is made of, how it is finished, its measurements and how to contact the seller. It distinguishes available stock from a waitlist or preorder.

SIAFRA’s current specification is 18K gold PVD over stainless steel. The brand is pre-launch and waitlist-only; the specification is not a measured durability claim. When comparing brands, separate published specifications from laboratory evidence and promises about future service.
